At the start of this month, Seagull Books shifted into a new home at 36C, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road in Kolkata, 700025. Already into their 36th year, Seagull Books has also opened a new space in Delhi’s Maharani Bagh. LeftWord Books has a special designated shelf at Seagull Bookstore in Kolkata. All our new titles and titles from our back-list are available at the Seagull Bookstore. We are planning to organize events at Seagull Books’ space in the form of reading groups, small poetry sessions, exhibitions, discussions etc. to build a community of active readers. Along with events at Seagull Bookstore, we are also going to have activities in and around the progressive spaces like Presidency University, Jadavpur University etc. We kick-started these events with a seminar in Jadavpur University.
On Friday, the 20th of July, we held a seminar called ‘Is Marx an Atheist’ in Jadavpur University. This seminar was a part of a segment called ‘LeftWord Seminars’. There will be more talks, discussions and seminars of similar nature in this segment. Professor N.D Hazra initiated a discussion on the contradictions that are often associated with the giant figure of Marx. Through this seminar, he took us down a lane that most prefer to not discuss when discussing Marx― alienation.
The talk by Professor Hazra will be followed by our very next event in the first half of August. We are organizing an Anti-War week in Jadavpur University marking the 53rd anniversary of the bombing of two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, by American forces on 6th and 8th of August in 1945. The festival will feature an Anti-War musical festival along with our Anti-War book stall. We are extremely lucky to have an exciting group of coordinators and volunteers who are enthusiastically working behind the scenes to organize these events. This event will be followed by more events. Look out for our activities in Kolkata. For any information or queries about LeftWord Books in Kolkata, you can contact us at 9038294569.
